People Who Shaped Me: Renee Curtis

A tribute to Renee Curtis and the moments, laughter, and light she brought into my life.

Some people cross your path for a moment, others for a season—but all of them leave something behind. Renee Curtis is one of those people who made life feel unexpectedly brighter, full of connection and joy.

I first met Renee freshman year during a ward activity at BYU. I was trying to meet as many people as I could, rushing around with my get-to-know-you sheet, when she walked up and introduced herself. “My name is Renee,” she said, smiling warmly at my roommate and me. What started as a casual conversation stretched into thirty minutes of laughter, stories, and that effortless ease that made time slip away. Even then, I felt something stir—something that I couldn’t ignore.

Just two days later, we were swing dancing for the first time. I was a train wreck, trying to keep up and hoping to make a good impression, but Renee made it effortless. She laughed at my awkward spins, guided me with patience, and somehow turned my clumsy attempts into moments of joy. That night, I realized that being around her made even the most nerve-wracking experiences feel light and fun.

From there, our days quickly filled with shared adventures. Game nights became our little tradition, full of laughter, playful competition, and inside jokes that only we understood. Our first date, our first kiss—they were milestones that made ordinary days feel extraordinary. Even mundane moments, like decorating the car for my brother's wedding and carrying her because her heals were hurting, carried a spark of connection that stayed with me long after they ended.

We explored new experiences together—hikes up the Y, ziplining over treetops, pumpkin patches, haunted forests, and dance sport competitions—each adventure filled with laughter and a sense of shared discovery. Even quiet moments, like painting portraits of each other or simply chatting about our days, became memories I treasure. Renee had a way of making ordinary moments feel magical, of turning small gestures into something unforgettable.

Through all these experiences, I learned that connection and care don’t need to be loud or dramatic—they can be steady, genuine, and profoundly meaningful. She showed me how joy can be found in everyday moments, how laughter can heal, how presence can leave a lasting impression on someone’s heart, and how truly getting to know someone can be so rewarding. She showed me that everyone has a story worth knowing and I am grateful that I got to know hers.

Life, of course, moves in unexpected ways. There were seasons of closeness and moments apart, times for growth and reflection, but those periods never erased the chapters Renee helped write in my life. She will always be someone I respect for her warmth, her energy, her kindness, and the way she made each day feel a little brighter.

No matter where our paths lead, I’ll always be grateful for Renee—for the adventures, the quiet moments, and the joy she brought into my life. She reminded me that love, connection, and happiness are often found in the everyday moments we might otherwise overlook.
