The King Lab: Week 2 Update
Welcome back to The King Lab. This week was defined by closing the loop on foundational technical systems and moving from abstract curriculum concepts to concrete teaching resources.
Despite the pressure of final exams wrapping up, significant progress was made in cementing the infrastructure for both the digital platform and the educational materials.
What Moved This Week
1. Authentication: From Foundation to Function
Last week I focused on the theory and security of authentication; this week, I executed it. The core user signup, login, and authentication flows are now complete and functional.
This isn't just about logging in—it’s about verifying identity securely so that I can begin building the user-specific experiences that will define the platform. The "front door" is now built and locked.
2. Deep Dive: Connection & Curriculum
On the Country Swing side, I shifted focus from the broad list of techniques to deep-diving into specific modules.
- First Module Refinement: I began refining the first formal technique PDF, focusing specifically on Connection — Connection Points.
- Gamification of Learning: I’ve documented a substantial list of games we use at BYU Country Swing, along with specific methodologies on how I teach students to practice technique, not just learn it.
- User Research: I spent time interviewing dancers and instructors regarding the format of online workshops and PDF resources. Understanding how people learn best is dictating how I structure these documents.
3. Project Spotlight: BYU Country Swing Management System
I also published a comprehensive look at a major project I’ve been managing. BYU Country Swing System
This case study breaks down the operational brain behind the club. It details how we manage over 1300+ members per semester and coordinate 50+ volunteers. It’s a look at the systems thinking required to run a community of that size effectively.
Looking Ahead
With finals finishing up, the upcoming winter break provides a window for deep work.
Technical Evolution: I will be converting the current authentication system into Role-Based Access Control (RBAC).
- This ensures specific parts of the domain are protected and accessible only to users with the correct permissions.
- This is the final step needed before opening up the ecosystem for people to create their own user profiles.
Curriculum Beta Testing: I aim to finish the "Connection Points" technique PDF and distribute it to a select group for feedback. This "beta test" of the material will help refine the teaching language and visual formatting before rolling it out on a larger scale.
