The King Lab: Week 4 - Security, Structure, and Slowing Down

Securing the CMS, defining the 'Big Three' techniques, and the reality of maintaining momentum during the holidays.

Welcome back to The King Lab. If Week 3 was about definition and deployment, Week 4 was about consistency amidst chaos.

Between Christmas, celebrating my birthday, and battling sickness, deep work time was at a premium this week. However, progress is not always defined by massive leaps; sometimes, it is defined by inching forward when everything else tries to pull you backward.

The Reality Check

I want to be transparent about the development lifecycle. It is rarely a straight line of productivity. With the holidays and health taking priority, I couldn't move mountains this week. Instead, I focused on "locking in" previous wins and laying the groundwork for the user interface.

What Moved This Week

1. Infrastructure: Locking Down the Core

Building on last week's deployment of Role-Based Access Control (RBAC), this week was about enforcement.

I have officially locked down the Content Management System (CMS). Previously, the API might have been open to broader access for testing; now, it is strictly gated. Only authorized users with the correct role tokens can access or manipulate the ecosystem's data.

  • Why this matters: Security isn't a feature; it’s a foundation. By securing the CMS now, I ensure that as we open the "Workshop Pages" to the public, the backend remains impervious to unauthorized tinkering.

2. Curriculum Design: The "Big Three" Overviews

Last week, I established a new standard: Theory before Practice. I decided that every major pillar needs an "Overview" document to explain the why before the how.

This week, I applied that standard to the three most critical elements of Country Swing. I have begun drafting the high-level overviews for:

  1. Line of Dance
  2. Tension
  3. Musicality

These documents will serve as the prerequisites for the technical workshops. They ensure that when a student learns a new technique, they understand the framework and terminology about that technique.

3. Frontend: Visualizing the Workshop

With the backend security tightening, I shifted focus to the user experience. I have begun the design phase for the Workshop Pages on the Country Swing site.

This is where the user finally interacts with the system. The design goal is to make these pages feel like a premium educational experience—clean, accessible, and focused on the content (the PDFs and future video courses).

Looking Ahead

Now that the holidays are wrapping up and I am on the mend, the goal for Week 5 is velocity.

  • Finalize Designs: Move the Workshop Pages from design concepts to code.
  • Content Polish: Finish the drafts for the Line of Dance and Tension overviews so they are ready for the "Market Validation" phase mentioned last week.
  • Health: Get back to 100% so the code can flow freely again.
